Mossy Creek Fly Fishing Forecast 6/9/2025

Brian brings us the forecast this week. We are riding high with water right now just about everywhere. Over 2 inches fell from Friday evening to Sunday morning. The larger rivers are swollen and dirty right now but we anticipate most everything will be fishable by Wednesday and Thursday. North River and the South Fork are still running very dirty but dropping and clearing up quickly. We have warm and mostly clear weather this week. They are calling for the possibility of a storm on Tuesday and then showers and rain are back Friday and through the weekend. Right now it is looking more like soft rain and showers than anything significant. Hopefully enough overcast and rain for some epic trout fishing conditions and enough water to sustain water flows and keep us from drying out. We are still seeing some spotty drakes in the evening hours mixed with some smaller sulphurs. Tricos are really firing up and have been thick most mornings. We are going to start seeing much better action with our terrestrial fishing this month. Ants, beetles, small hoppers are now in play but will really start crushing fish by the 1st week of July. Little yellow stones are necessary for the mountain streams right now. Enjoy the brook trout fishing while conditions are great! Water flows right now should guarantee us at least a few weeks of near perfect conditions.  Bass fishing should be excellent once water clarity improves. We saw largemouth bass and surprisingly a ton of smallmouth spawning again and guarding nests last week! It is not uncommon to see numbers of 12-14" smallmouth bass on nests this time of year, especially after periods of high and flooding water. What was uncommon was to see a number of 18-20" smallmouth bass actively spawning! Good news is the South Fork is famous for fish spawning at different periods of the spring or spawning again after a big flood. So it is looking like despite having a massive flood after our primary spawning period we should see some decent residual year class from this spring! Musky were extremely active last week. We had 5 different musky follow bass offerings in about a 1 hour period last week. Had we actively been targeting musky it would have likely been great fishing! Watch water temps, especially on hot and sunny afternoons. Give the musky a break if water temps breach 75 on the Shenandoah. Early morning hours you should see water temps in the upper 60's or low 70's. Enjoy the fishing this week!!
