Mossy Creek Fly Fishing Forecast 6/23/2025

Andy brings us the forecast this week. It is hot all over the east coast but the good news is we have good water levels right now with the forecast for rain towards the end of the week. Expect temps in the upper 90's with heat indices over 100 Monday and Tuesday with lows around 70 each night. Highs will be around 90 by Thursday. Afternoon thunderstorms are likely Wednesday with higher threats 50-60% Thursday into the weekend. Trout anglers should target early morning hours from sunup to around 11am. Low light, cooler temps, and morning insect hatches will provide the best fishing in the most comfortable temps. Bass anglers be prepared to hydrate as it will be hot floating and even wading rivers this week. Bass fishing has been good much of the day with action good through the afternoon hours. We are hopeful for some good topwater fishing again this week as river levels drop and clarity improves every day. Umpqua swim frogs, deer hair poppers, cork bugs, sneaky petes, soft chews, wiggle minnows are super fun options to fish right now. If fish seem sluggish make sure to fish some deeper patterns that can make contact with the bottom. As water levels drop carp fishing should improve as well. This warm weather should have them pretty actively feeding and mudding! Dry River, North River, Skidmore Fork, and much of the Shenandoah National Park will provide for some good brook trout fishing while water levels are up. Ants, beetles, little yellow stones, and just about any attractor dry fly or nymph should work well in these conditions. Spring creeks are seeing tricos, ants, beetles, and hopper patterns working well. Try a hopper dropper in the afternoon to evening hours if you don't see any actively rising fish. Target the overcast days and any periods of rain for good streamer fishing. DWR is no longer stocking trout but we have had some good reports from Spring Run, Cowpasture, Bullpasture, South River, and a few of the other larger stocked rivers. The Jackson tailwater is cold and fishing well this year. We will continue to run our trout fishing trips on the spring creeks targeting the early morning hours in this heat but will be enjoying floating for bass all summer long!
