Mossy Creek Fly Fishing Forecast 5/4/2026

Colby brings us the forecast this week. We have some typical spring weather ahead with a mix of sunshine, wind, rain, cool weather and hot weather! Look for a bulk of the rain and potential thunderstorm Wednesday into Thursday. We start off a bit breezy with gusts Monday into Wednesday up to 30mph. Water levels are still very low for springtime. That said up in the mountains we received a few shots of rain last week and hoping for a decent boost of water this week to keep fishing active. While water levels are low the temps are still in the 50's on most streams thanks to cool nights. Insect hatches have been good and dry fly fishing technical(with spooky conditions) but the fish are eager to eat a well presented fly. So while we continue to wait for rain you may decide to get out and trout fish while you can and while temps are suitable. DWR was out stocking fish last week and some of our favorite special reg waters were stocked. Pedlar DH, South River Catch and Release, North River DH, Back Creek DH, and the Hidden Valley section of the Jackson were stocked. Hit these this month and while we have a decent bit of water flowing in these streams! The bass fishing has been wild this year with extremely warm and low water conditions in early April setting spawn almost 3 weeks early putting many of our fisheries in post spawn right now in early May. The south fork still has some fish nesting but we also have our sunfish finishing up spawn early. While water levels remain low we should continue to have some good topwater fishing. Swim Frogs, Todd's Wiggle Minnows, Poppers, and Deer Hair bugs of every size and color are working right now. On frontal days you need to have crayfish, hellgrammites, and baitfish patterns ready to go. Prefront and stable weather days the topwater bite has been very fun! Carp were spawning last week and very greedily eating flies. With water levels being extremely low right now you should be prepared for targeting feeding carp just about any day you can see them up in the shallows! Musky fishing has been cranking up as most fish are post spawn and happy with water temps around 60 degrees. We have a lot of great fishing right now despite being seasonally low on water. Get out and enjoy it!
