Brian brings us the forecast this week. Rain was welcome on Saturday this past weekend that helped hold water levels with more rain Tuesday evening into Thursday. Every major river in VA is at summer/fall levels so we need to get into a wet weather pattern rapidly or trout fishing will be in trouble for the late spring/summer fishing. Despite lower than average water levels, it is clear and the insect activity strong and the dry fly and topwater fishing has been great! So far in April we have enjoyed good trout fishing and some amazing bass fishing. With overcast and rainy weather this week get ready for some streamer fishing! DWR stocked a lot of water last week and many of the lakes. Mint Springs, Sugar Hollow, Hearthstone, Elkhorn, Cowpasture, Jackson, Bullpasture, Hughes, Tye, Briery Branch, Hone Quarry, and Passage Creek in our region have been stocked. West VA streams are loaded with fish as well and many are fishing well as they are low, clear, and experiencing some amazing insect hatches. Enjoy the trout fishing up in the mountains and on the state managed rivers while we still have some decent conditions. On the bass front the warm weather kicked spawn off way early this year and most fish are not only done spawning but have left their nesting sites with fry scattered all over the place! This bodes well for a good spawn this year if we can avoid some flood events in the next few months. Plan on seeing fish still in spawning sites as there are always late bloomers and this is a very fractured year with the water temps up and down and all over the place. The good news is the topwater bite has been incredible. As long as the water is low, clear, and warm, this trend will continue! Musky should be coming off spawn much earlier too and we have seen some big ones caught recently. We have more April like weather this week into next week so enjoy the comfortable weather and enjoy some great fishing from the mountain tops to the Valley floor!
