Mossy Creek Fly Fishing Forecast 4/13/2026

Brian brings us the forecast this week. It may end up feeling more like summer this week than spring. Look for temps hitting the 80's and possibly the low 90's mid week. Water levels are well below average right now. Typically we have very strong water flows in April from "spring showers". Unfortunately we haven't had much rainfall in the past month and the 10 day forecast isn't showing any real significant rain. What does that mean for fishing? Right now just about all of our trout water is fishing well. Mountain streams, DWR stocked waters, and the spring creeks. With water levels low the dry fly fishing has been great. Fish are spooky in these low and clear conditions especially on the bright sunny days. While fishing has been good pretty much all day with water temps favorable, you may start to find better action early and late during low light periods or overcast days until we get some rainfall to replenish water flow. Fish your parachute style dries up in the mountains- parachute brown, adams, cahill, hendrickson, royal, and purples...stimulators, caddis, humpy's, wulff patterns are also working well and will help float nymphs if you are fishing a dry-dropper rig. Take advantage of what water we have available now if you can as we could have another dry spell this spring. DWR has been out stocking so keep an eye on their website for daily updates. Right now North River upper, North River DH, and South River have been stocked well for April. You can also find good fishing at Spring Run, Bullpasture, Jackson Special Reg,and  Back Creek. Dry droppers, nymph rigs, and streamers along with some junk food style attractors will be key on the stocked waters. Spring creeks should start seeing some sulphurs in the evenings. With the low and clear conditions dry fly action should start picking up for the evening hatch. Crayfish and sculpin patterns work year round and are essential this time of year until our insect hatches really start to get thick. Bass anglers should be able to find fish pretty easily as water levels are low and clear right now. Bass are making their way out of their deep winter ledges and finding their way to where they will spawn this spring. We are about 10 days or so from our largest bass ready to spawn. If conditions continue to be low and clear through April it will be important to really watch where you fish so you don't pull big spawning fish off nests. We will do our best to keep eyes on the spawn to keep folks informed as to the progress this year. Musky anglers will find these fish are still in various stages of spawn right now. Even with warming water temps we could still find fish spawning well into May. We have quite a few float trips coming up this week and next so stay tuned for more detailed reports on our social channels! Enjoy this beautiful weather this week and take advantage of the good fishing conditions while you can!
