Mossy Creek Fly Fishing Forecast 10/6/2025

Brian brings us the fishing forecast this week. Sunny and 80 around Harrisonburg today but we have a front moving through Tuesday evening into Wednesday. Overcast and breezy weather will form Tuesday and when the front clears out we will have cooler weather that more feels like fall! Highs in the 60's with lows in the mid to low 40's! Now would be a good time to put those summer solar shirts away and bring out the wool and fleece layering pieces. Wind and rain mid week could bring down some leaves. So if you are planning on fishing our larger rivers like the Shenandoah for musky just know the 'leaf hatch' could get thick and create some challenges while fishing. Basswit fishing is transitioning every day to fall/winter patterns. Bass are moving to the deep ledge holes creating 'voids' on sections of river that were productive during the summer months. This means you should target the deeper sections of river and around structure like big rock ledges and large pieces of wood structure. If water clarity remains super clear make sure you don't spook fish as they are usually in pods right now and 1 spooked fish could mean all the others get lock jaw. Topwater fishing can still be good this time of year but on the warmest afternoons  and generally later in the day. Many of the bass lately have been coughing up crayfish when we land them so make sure you have plenty of crayfish patterns if you head out over the next few weeks. Musky anglers should see plenty of fish right now fairly active especially during low light periods and on overcast days. Leaves in the river will be our biggest factor until November. Breezy days will be the most challenging when leaves are being blown into the river. Trout anglers can now start hitting up some DWR managed stocked streams. Mountain brook trout streams are running very low right now and once we get a bit of rain this week and temps drop we could start to see some spawning activity in the next 2 weeks. Brook trout fishing just won't be good and anglers should consider giving them a break while there are options for stocked fish on some of the bigger streams. DWR has stocked Piney DH, the Bullpasture, Cowpasture, Spring Run, Tye, Back Creek DH, and Passage DH in our area. Keep an eye on the DWR site for daily updates. Let's keep our fingers crossed for an inch or 2 of rain this week!!! In the meantime, enjoy the fall weather ahead and come see us for a great sale on clearance summer apparel and some new fall items!
