Mossy Creek Fly Fishing Forecast 8/25/2026

Brian brings us the forecast this week. Rain over the weekend gave us another little bump in water levels. Some of the mountain streams, especially the east side of the Blue Ridge, received a few inches of rain. The South Fork of the Shenandoah bumped up a bit. Any rise in water levels recently has improved the bite. The brook trout fishing turns on almost immediately with fish spreading out and feeding on just about anything they can find. We are seeing the same on the smallmouth rivers with a much improved topwater bite. The bug bite was really good yesterday and should continue the next few days especially before the next front coming in Wednesday evening and Thursday. We aren't expecting a ton of rain later this week but showers and thunderstorms will hopefully bring us another slight bump in flows. The summer patterns haven't changed much with trout taking ants, beetles, hoppers, tricos, and hex. The hex hatch on Mossy is still going strong for the 3rd week and fish are really tuned into them. Trico hatches are thick on the calm mornings. Hoppers range from small to supersized in green, yellow, and tan. Crickets are out now in good numbers so don't overlook large black terrestrials now well into fall! Take advantage of any rise in water or overcast and rainy days as the fishing is much better with those conditions or plan on fishing super early or late in the evening. Bass fishing has been solid all day with bass taking surface bugs just about all day recently. The hot and bright sunny days you should focus on the shady spots as many of the large bass will orient in these areas. Look for carp cruising and mudding, especially early, late, or on the overcast days. Enjoy the week ahead and the milder temps and low humidity while it lasts!! Need bass flies?
