Mossy Creek Fly Fishing Forecast 10/5/2026

Brian brings us the forecast this week. It is going to be beautiful with very sunny weather and some cooler nights. Temps will be in the 70's with Thursday approaching 80. We may see some rain towards the end of the weekend on Sunday. Leaves are starting to change and drop. The leaf hatch will be in full force in a few weeks so get out before they choke up the rivers. Right now you can find some water up in the mountains on the east slope of the blue ridge. The central part of the Valley received rain Friday and Friday night but the weekend was a bust for measurable rain. Most of our mountain streams are running low. You can find some fishable runs but the fish will be spooky as levels are getting thin again. We may not get enough quality rainfall to improve fishing conditions before the brookies spawn so you may need to hit the spring creeks, tailwaters, or the DWR stocked streams over the next few weeks if you are trout fishing. Load heavy on worms, eggs, mops, and attractors for stocked fish. The spring creek fish are still taking tricos in the mornings, hoppers, ants, beetles, and crickets. You may also see some big spiders migrating across the creek this time of year along with some caddis popping. You may try skating a bushy dry fly if you see some aggressive rises this time of year. Bass anglers can find some action this week with the stable weather. Cool nights will slow the bite a bit and river levels are very low around us so you will have a challenging time getting boats down the river right now. The low water and cooler nights will likely migrate the smallmouth to their wintering holes much quicker this year as many were already seeking refuge in those areas from the extended drought conditions. The musky bite has cranked up with the cooler weather and we have seen some productive days lately. That fishing should be good until the river gets choked with leaves. The breezy days will be the most challenging to navigate the leaf hatch! Enjoy the nice weather and the leaves changing colors this week. It will be a great time to get outside and fish!
