Mossy Creek Fly Fishing Forecast 9/1/2026

Brian brings us the forecast this week. Looks and feels like another heat wave this week. Fortunately it looks like it will only last into Saturday. Highs return to around 80 degrees on Sunday and next Monday so lets hope we stay on that trend! Water levels from storms last week are starting to disappear and we are back to base flows on most of our local rivers. You will find more water just north of Harrisonburg in the North Fork of the Shenandoah drainage that still has above average flows. Trout fishing in the mountains has slowed back down but there is some water for a few days out on Dry River and Skidmore Fork and on the larger East slope drainages in the Park. Most of our trout fishing will remain on the spring creeks where we are catching fish on dry flies most of the day. Tricos in the mornings, beetles, ants, hoppers, crickets, and hex mayflies all afternoon and evening are the ticket. May be have some streamers ready for later this week or on Saturday if we have some rainy weather. Trout fishing will improve once we have some significant rainfall and cooler weather. Until then we have another month of good smallmouth fishing to look forward to. Water levels are low but fishing was solid over the weekend and yesterday. Smaller crayfish, hellgrammites, and baitfish patterns took fish. Topwater fishing has been good most days. The prefrontal days and when water levels are dropping after storms has been best. Frogs, poppers, soft chews are great patterns into October. Get out and enjoy this smallmouth summer fishing pattern while it lasts. Get your shots at carp as well as they will move and feed deep once water temps drop in the fall. Musky anglers should start prepping gear for cooler water temps.
