Mossy Creek Fly Fishing Forecast 6/17/2024

Andy brings us the forecast this week. We are officially transitioning into summer this week and with that we will have sunny, dry, and hot weather for the next few weeks. There will be a threat of afternoon thunderstorms most days the temps get into the 90's. Hopefully we will get some of that moisture to help keep some of the creeks and streams up and flowing nicely. Now would be a good idea to get out those stream thermometers out or pick one up if you don't have one to ensure water temps for trout and musky don't get too warm for fishing. Mountain brook trout streams still have a bit of water flow right now and reports have been good but are getting technical. Dry flies in smaller sizes like 14-18 might be a better play in skinny water with spooky fish. You may need to downsize to 6x or 7x as well if fish are reluctant to take your fly. Standard attractor dries are still working well but there are good numbers of little yellow stones and there are good numbers of ants and beetles available to these fish. Spring creeks are seeing quality trico hatches in the morning hours. With the heat fishing will be best from daybreak until around 11AM until the heat really starts to crank. Overcast days and evenings will also fish better than mid afternoons on bright days. Terrestrials are working well on the spring creeks. Beetles will be getting thicker by the day and will start to peak around the 2nd week of July. Hoppers are out but will be in peak by July through September. While the heat is in the 90's we will be primarily focused on fishing for smallmouth bass. Bright sunny days you will find the fish in the deep pockets along the shady banks! Topwater fishing has been excellent. Load up on poppers, sneaky petes, swim frogs, soft chews, and deer hair bugs. You can downsize your crayfish and baitfish flies as well so you don't spook big bass if you cast too close to them. Watch out for feeding carp too!! Water levels are low and clear enough that they are much more readily available to present flies to! Musky anglers should target early morning hours right now as our water temps approach the mid 70's! Check out the video for additional information!
