Mossy Creek Fly Fishing Forecast 5/13/2024

Brian brings us the fishing forecast this week. Mid May brings us endless opportunities for excellent fishing in Virginia. Mountain brook trout streams are in peak fishing condition. We have a lot of bugs hatching and little yellow stoneflies have been thick lately. You should be preparing for the green drake hatch later this month generally getting thick around Memorial Day weekend. Most attractor dries with attractor nymph droppers are going to work as reports have shown the brook trout haven't been overly picky. With rain in the forecast this week be prepared for a bump in water flows. That means you should be able to get away with some larger flies! The overcast and rainy days should prove excellent for streamer fishing on the spring creeks as well. Keep an eye out on the warmer sunny mornings for the first big trico hatches of the season. The evening hatch is going strong and you should see some big drakes coming off over the next few weeks that should get the interest of the largest fish. The bass fishing is great on the local rivers. You will find bass in various stages of spawn right now. Many of the largest smallmouth are done and have abandoned nests. You will likely see smaller smallmouth bass, largemouth, and sunfish on beds now and into the end of the month. Carp have been mudding and browsing the shallows and the musky bite is turning on. Keep an eye on the radar, rainfall gauges, and USGS realtime streamflow gauges this week especially on Tuesday night into Thursday. Outside of the rain events we expect more of the best fishing of the year right now! Carve some time out of your schedule and enjoy these peak season conditions!
