Mossy Creek Fly Fishing Forecast 2/17/2025

Andy brings us the forecast this week. We have been cold, wet, and very soggy lately. Mix that with some impressive winds over the past few weeks and a lot of folks are suffering from cabin fever. We haven't had a good week long stretch of warm weather in quite some time but the forecast is looking promising by the weekend and next week. It will be sunny and cold most of this week with a winter storm coming in Wednesday and Wednesday night. It is looking like may be 2-5 inches may fall mid week but it will be cold without much water going into the creeks and streams. So we look forward to water levels dropping a bit to fishable levels this week and mix that with some warmer weather next week it will be GO TIME!!! Stock up on streamers and big nymphs and load heavy on split shot, tippet, and indicators. A favorite way to catch fish this time of year in these conditions is fishing a size 6, 8, or 10 rubber legged crystal bugger or golden retriever style fly under a strike indicator dead drifting them through a hole or run and then allowing them to swing at the end of the presentation. If the fish are eating on the dead drift you can fish upstream like nymph fishing with these larger patterns. If they are picking up the fly on the swing you can fish downstream with or without an indicator and swing and twitch your flies through the runs. With cold water temps don't expect fish to move a bunch and chase down your flies. That is why the dead drift technique can work so well in these conditions. The fish get a good sized meal without much effort. Big flashy or bushy rubber legged nymphs or nymphs with hot spots or bright beads will work as well. With water volumes running at max go bigger with size 10, 12 nymphs and get ready to still add some split shot to them. Streamer anglers can grab versi leaders or sink tip lines to help keep flies down in the strike zone. You may even need to add some split shot above your streamer to help keep it down as well. VA DWR and WV DNR are out stocking fish on the public waterways. The spring creeks are already in great shape. The larger warmwater rivers are still a tad high to target bass or musky but we look forward to getting back out on those next week! Get excited folks! It looks like at a minimum we are going to be enjoying a few weeks of mild to warmer weather by the end of the weekend!!!
