Mossy Creek Fly Fishing Forecast 2/3/2025

Brian brings us the forecast this week. It is hard to believe it is February already! Despite not having any good weather windows in January to fish we have been busy with shows and other shop work that it actually flew by quickly for us. For those that have cabin fever and January felt like an eternity, this week should provide you with an opportunity to dust off your trout fishing gear and hit the water. Temps will be a tad warmer than average with highs in the 60's and 50's some days! Rainfall last week along with melting snow and ice really bumped up water flows. High mountain streams like Skidmore Fork, North River, Ramsey's Draft, and the Park streams are all full right now. Temps are still cold and will likely remain cold in the upper 30's this week but at least we have some quality conditions to fish. This may not last long as future weather models are showing more cold weather and possibly more snow next week and throughout February. The good news is rain and snow now will really help us long-term for spring fishing water levels. We are still in a bit of deficit from the drought last summer and fall but ground water is on the rise right now and with rain in the forecast every week throughout February we can make up quite a bit of ground! Considering all of these factors we suggest getting big nymphs, streamers, split shot, and sink tip lines ready for the next couple of months. DWR is out stocking again and most recently stocked the Jackson Special Reg, Cowpasture, Spring Run, and all sections of the Roanoke last week. We anticipate more fish being stocked this week while water flows are great just about everywhere. Anglers are out today catching fish on streamers bounced off the bottom or swung and on indicator or euro nymphing rigs. For those that live in the area we are hosting our IRON FLY event tonight, Monday 2/3 at 6:30 at Pale Fire in downtown Harrisonburg. Come hang out and watch the action!
