Mossy Creek Fly Fishing Forecast 1/27/2025

Nick brings us the forecast this week. The weather is breaking and we will have some warmer sunny conditions much of the week. Water temps will drop as ice and snow melts most of this week. There is a threat of rain Friday into Saturday that might help bring up water temps and also help boost flows. Streamer fishing is starting to get a bit better with some water stain. We have been bouncing streamers off the bottom and fishing nymphs under strike indicators. Look for dry fly opportunities when temps rise up a bit. Blue wing olives are around in the afternoon hours especially on the overcast calm days. We hope to see some big caddis hatching soon to give fish an opportunity to get adjusted to seeing some larger fly patterns. DWR has been able to stock a few streams lately. The Cowpasture was stocked today. As more snow melts and roadways open up we should see more trout water restocked. West VA DNR has also been out the last few days stocking as well. The 10 day forecast is showing favorable temps for this time of year to get out and catch some fish. Bass and musky fishing should be accessible on most rivers later this week or weekend. Some of our local rivers like the North Fork of the Shenandoah were completely iced over this past weekend. Most boat ramps will be snow free mid week but watch for slick spots especially in the morning hours as most nights will still be in the 20's. A lot of folks are anxious to get back out fishing so we anticipate a lot of reports coming in over the next week. For those looking for a fun evening we are hosting our 2025 Iron Fly Event at Pale Fire Brewing in downtown Harrisonburg from 6:30-9pm. This event is free to attend and everyone is welcome to attend whether you have tying skills or not. We will be accepting donations that will go to benefit the JMU Fly Fishing Club. Come have some fun, watch or participate in the action. Have a great week and stop by the shop if you need to reload those fly boxes.
