Mossy Creek Fly Fishing Forecast 8/25/2025

Colby brings us the forecast this week. The weather has changed a bit and we are expecting sunny, cool, and calm weather into next week. Highs will be in the 70's and lows will be around 50 at night in Harrisonburg. Expect lows in the 40's up at higher elevations. The other big change is our water levels. In June and July we saw rain almost daily and August totals have been lackluster. Any time of year if we have a 30 plus day stretch without rain our streams will tend to get low. Mountain brook trout streams locally are now running near base flow. Dry River, Skidmore, North River, for example are fishable but the fish are extremely spooky. Water temps are not going to be a threat but now will be a good time to downsize your flies and lengthen your leaders up in the mountains. Ants, beetles, small yellow stones, caddis, and nymphs in the 14 and 16 size range are now in play. On the spring creeks you will see tricos most mornings and the hexagenia have arrived in the evenings and fishing the last 30 minutes of daylight can be quite good. Hopper droppers will be in play this week as we are expecting mostly sunny days and streamer fishing could be tough. Our grasshoppers are BIG right now so don't be afraid to throw your largest patterns. Bass fishing has been solid on the South Fork Shenandoah. With a 10 day period of stable weather we anticipate good fishing. Topwater action may be slower in the early morning hours if it is cool out but the damselfly and dragonfly activity has been excellent in the late afternoon hours. Expect to see some musky photos soon as water temps will bring musky back on the menu for the foreseeable future! We had some good shots at carp yesterday with 1 lost fish. If our weather holds we anticipate an excellent month of bass fishing ahead! Come visit the shop and take advantage of our summer sale while supplies last and enjoy this amazing weather ahead!
