Mossy Creek Fly Fishing Forecast 4/29/2025

Colby brings us the forecast this week. Sorry for the delay on getting this out the entire crew has been out instructing and guiding every day and shop traffic on Monday left us with no time to film our forecast. The weather is beautiful again this week with almost summer like conditions early this week with temps in the 80's and more seasonal temps in the 70's later this week and over the weekend. The big topic of discussion is the lack of rain and below average water levels just about everywhere in the region. This is the 3rd year in a row where we haven't had much of any measurable rainfall in April. The good news is water temps are still cold everywhere. With lows in the 30's lately most of our stream temps are in the upper 50's or low 60's with a lot of insect activity. Dry fly fishing has been good but you need to be tactical with your presentations as fish are spooky in these low water conditions! Focus on the larger streams right now that have the best water flow for better fishing conditions. The smallest blue lines are going to be a challenge and are really looking pitiful for April. Rain is in the forecast Tuesday night into Saturday but unless we have some thunderstorm activity we aren't expecting much from this system. Most attractor dry flies in size 14-16 will catch the eye of a brook trout right now. March browns, Hendricksons, Cahills, and little yellow stones are great choices. Standard nymphs like prince, hare's ears, pheasant tails, copper johns, along with flashier patterns like psycho prince, bloody mary, puparrazzi, ect in size 14-16 will also work if the fish aren't looking up. On the spring creeks the evening hatch has been best for dry fly activity. The bright sunny days have been challenging and nymphs or smaller jig streamers are working well. Target the overcast and rainy days on the spring creeks for good streamer fishing and opportunities at larger fish. The smallmouth are in full spawn mode right now with most fish already having dropped eggs with males guarding eggs or small fry. We expect to see males on nests at least for the next 2 weeks but will likely see residual spawning all the way into mid May. Musky are typically still spawning this time of year but will be much easier to target post spawn by the middle to later part of May. Despite the below average water levels the fishing has been good in the area. Take advantage of the nice weather and get out while conditions are still favorable! Have an awesome week!
