Mossy Creek Fly Fishing Forecast 5/6/2025

Brian brings us the forecast this week. It is warm this week but not nearly as hot. Expect temps in the 60's and low 70's with lows in the low 40's much of this week. Not much rain is expected outside of some possible thunderstorms around Thursday and Thursday night. Hopefully we can get some rain out of that front pushing into the area as the 10 day isn't showing much moisture at all and we are already very dry for this time of year. That said we do have some good water flowing along Dry River and Skidmore Fork and the larger streams over in the SNP and Blue Ridge. Lots of bugs are hatching. We saw our first little yellow stones of the year over the weekend. Dry fly fishing up in the mountains has been a blast. Size 14 and 16 attractor dry flies like Royal wulffs, Humpies, Stimulators, Trudes, and Caddis have been working. You can be specific with hatches using our Parachute Brown, UV Cinnamon parachutes, hendricksons, cahills, and mini hot garcias in tan and yellow. Most any nymph in size 14 or 16 will get the attention of a brookie right now. Blue, purple, and green have been particularly effective. The spring creeks are still seeing some sulphurs before dark. We should start seeing our first tricos of the year this month and in a few weeks we will start seeing some green drakes. Jig streamers, sculpins, crayfish, and big rubber legged nymphs have been standard patterns out on the spring creeks. Smallmouth are finishing up spawn. There are still some males guarding nests and we could see this for another week or 2 but most of the big fish are entering post spawn and leaving their nesting grounds to take up residence in their summer haunts. Musky should be pulling out of spawn completely over the next week or so. Carp are finishing up spawn. So by mid to late May the warm water rivers are going to be HOT for all kinds of action. Try some topwater action on the calmer days. Swim frogs, poppers, Soft Chews are taking fish off the top! There is so much to be excited for right now fishing all over the Valley! Come visit us and join the fun!
