Andy brings us the forecast this week. It is finally looking like we will get some significant rainfall this week. Rain has already started to fall here Monday afternoon in Harrisonburg and the radar is showing like it will continue on into Thursday. Rain is going to start light and will hopefully get the ground wet for maximum absorption over the next few days. Tonight we could get upwards of an inch and then 1 to 2 inches on Tuesday with more Wednesday into Thursday. We are under a flash flood watch as rainfall could be intense locally at times. We will update everyone over the next few days on rainfall totals, expectations, and stream flow. Streamer fishing the spring creeks should be excellent. It is time to load up on heavier sized tippet- 0-3x for large to moderate sized streamers, 3-4x for bigger nymphs, and dont' forget your strike indicators, tippet rings, and split shot assortments. The mountain brook trout fishing has been good despite the low water conditions. We anticipate some very good fishing on the backside of this system and will enjoy fishing heavier tippet and much larger flies again! One downside to high water right now is the potential impact to the smallmouth spawn. Most of the smallmouth nests have been abandoned as fry have dispersed and are now on their own. A slow rise in water flow is manageable but large intense spikes could mean we lose a bunch of our recruitment for the year. We have witnessed a very good quality spawn this year with a lot of big fish nesting successfully. We can only hope we have get inches of rain this week slowly and spread out over time. Regardless of how much rain we get forecasters are talking about a pattern shift and it is looking like we will have more of a southernly flow for a while and should continue to get moisture coming from the gulf and off the coast.
