Mossy Creek Fly Fishing Forecast 5/19/2025

Colby brings us the forecast this week. It is sunny and beautiful out right now but we have another system moving in Tuesday that will bring rain Tuesday evening into Thursday and possibly Friday. We will also have a bit of a temperature reset. If you have been enjoying these summer like 80 degree days get ready for highs in the 60's and lows in the 40's again. We may see 70 degree weather again Sunday. Right now it is looking like a .25-.5 inches of rain Tuesday night and then showers and thunderstorms all day Wednesday with around another .25 inch of rain conservatively in the mix. Localized rain could be heavy at times so while most of our local trout rivers and the Shenandoah River are in good shape to fish today, conditions may change again in a few days. Like always we will try to keep everyone updated on weather and water conditions here and on our social channels. Brook trout streams at higher elevations were fishable over the weekend. Small drainages like North River and Skidmore had good reports. Larger drainages like Dry River are running clear but still have a lot of water flowing in them. You can certainly find fishable pockets. DWR spent most of last week stocking the ponds and lakes with trout as water levels were too high on most of our rivers for good fishing. The good news is we have water in the bank for a few weeks with more on the way. We are in a new weather pattern that should bring us Gulf and Atlantic moisture more often now. This would be helpful as we head into summer possibly avoiding another drought scenario. Little yellow stones are dominating the insect hatch density up in the mountains but we should start seeing green drakes show up this week! Grab your big bushy dry flies, nymphs, and indicators and enjoy this reset up on our mountain brook trout water!! The spring creeks are in good shape and starting to see tricos in the mornings early. We are hoping to start seeing some green drakes in the evening hours. Overcast with higher water flows means more good streamer fishing! Bass fishing should be good Tuesday but watch the weather and water flows before you head out on Wednesday or Thursday as rainfall can spike our rivers quickly.
