Mossy Creek Fly Fishing Forecast 10/30/2024
Brian brings us the forecast this week. Despite the low water we saw a bunch of anglers last week. Good reports are coming from the Jackson tailwater, Mossy Creek, and some of the West VA streams. Fishing has been technical but good on South River. VA DWR has stocked the DH sections of Passage Creek and the Roanoke River. They are also busy stocking the impoundments and lakes like Elkhorn, Hone Quarry, Briery Branch, Sugar Hollow, and Mint Springs. We spent an afternoon up on Elkhorn and found a nice blue wing olive hatch most of the day with fish rising all over the lake. Most of the fish were small but it was fun casting to cruisers looking for bugs on the surface. Our foliage is past peak and most leaves are dropping rapidly. We should see most of the leaves come down in the next 2 weeks. Cold weather is expected mid week in the evening hours but normalize by the end of the week and over the weekend with highs in the 60's and lows in the 40's. Bass anglers are still catching some nice fish. Anglers out musky fishing today and over the weekend are moving some nice fish. We are utilizing longer leaders and being as stealthy as we can with our presentations as musky are spooky in these clear water conditions. Downsizing your fly can entice a fish to strike vs follow too. If you need some cold weather gear we have all the layering pieces, hats, gloves, and socks to keep you warm this winter along with the best industry tested waders, boots, and outerwear. We still have some great deals left over from our JMU homecoming yard sale so stop in and see us if you are in the area!
