Mossy Creek Fly Fishing Foreast 10/23/2023
Nick brings us the forecast this week. The positives are we have a beautiful week ahead with peak season foliage colors going on! We had our first hard frost last night but we will have temps in the 70's and 80's by the end of the week. With the low water everywhere options are limited on trout fishing but there are still some good options. Mossy Creek, South River, Jackson Tailwater, Smith River Tailwater, and some streams over in West Virginia will be your better rivers to fish. Sugar Hollow Reservoir, Mint Springs, Elkhorn Lake have been stocked. Douthat has a small fee to fish but has a lot of fish in it right now. Switzer Reservoir is low but the stocked brookies and brown trout should be enjoying the cooler water temps. Anyone with a boat or kayak can enjoy some great fishing that doesn't get a ton of pressure on these trout fisheries. Keep an eye on the VA DWR and West VA DNR site for stocking updates. Attractor flies- egg patterns, worms, flashy nymphs and streamers will work on these stocked trout fisheries. Tricos are still around for a short time and BWO's can be found in the afternoon hours. Crickets, hoppers, beetles, and ants will still be around this week. The smallmouth have mostly moved into winter ledge areas but you can find them out scouting for food on the warmer afternoons. The smallmouth bite should be decent this week if you can locate fish and avoid heavy leaf litter. Musky are also feeding pretty well this week. We have seen a lot of musky moving around lately. Leaves are really your biggest challenge and you may need to move around a bit to find big holes and ledges to fish that are away from the main current brining leaves downstream. Check out the video for all the details and keep doing your rain dance!
