Mossy Creek Fly Fishing Forecast 1/2/2024
Happy New Year everyone! We hope you all had a wonderful holiday vacation. Brian brings us the forecast this week. The weather pattern has been favorable for wet weather lately. Streams are running around average flow for this time of year and there is quite a big system coming through this coming weekend that is forecasting a big snowstorm. Up to a foot of snow could arrive here by Sunday morning. The extended forecast is showing another system arriving the following weekend! The trend of storms every 7 days will really help us get caught up from last years drought. Some anglers in town for the season enjoyed some good mountain brook trout fishing over the holiday week. Skidmore Fork, Dry River, North River all have good flows and they are easy to fish from the edges to avoid stomping any redds. Standard nymphs like prince, hare's ear, and pheasant tails in 12-16 worked well. The spring creeks were busy during the holiday rush but we did see some large fish caught on the overcast and rainy days. Most of the creeks are still running slightly turbid but clearing up each day. Dry fly fishing should be good on the afternoons with BWO's and midges hatching. Jig nymphs and jig streamers will be key through this cold period ahead focusing on the deeper holes and undercut banks. DWR is still out stocking fish. North River DH was stocked last week and has decent flow right now. It may get coated in snow this weekend so give it a try before the storm. Beaver Creek has good flow and reports have been good. Susie Q Farm is finally back open. We are booking dates through 2024, so give us a call if you want to get your group out there. Musky and bass anglers should be enjoying these improved flows on all of our larger warm water rivers right now. We have some much colder weather ahead. That will likely mean fewer anglers on the river but it could also mean slower conditions. Big musky and bass will still feed in cold water but there may be fewer active fish making your job finding hungry fish a bit more challenging. We generally see the biggest musky of the year caught now through February so that is always an exciting prospect. Kick off the New Year and go catch a few fish so you start 2024 off right !!!
