Mossy Creek Fly Fishing Forecast 1/13/2025

Brian brings us the forecast this week. Cold weather has been around since the holiday season and it is looking like it is here to stay for most of the month. We still have snow on the ground here in Harrisonburg. The warmer sunny weather today melted it a bit and we have 4-5 inches still on the ground. Many of the higher elevation lakes and ponds are frozen over and the streams have some ice along the edges and on the slower moving eddies. We anticipate seeing more ice on our larger rivers as we have low temps in the single digits and teens many nights ahead. We will be avoiding the mountain streams until water levels bump up and roads and trails thaw out, and water temps come back up. DWR in VA and WV are still stocking some streams but that will likely be limited with treacherous roads and ice on some of these rivers. South River in the catch and release area and the upper stretch of the Jackson were stocked recently. Most of our trout fishing will take place on the spring creeks- Mossy, Beaver, Spring Run, Buffalo until this weather pattern changes. Bass fishing is always tough when water temps hit the low 30's so we will wait for temps to hit the mid 40's again before we hunt smallmouth again. Watch for ice on the boat ramps and big pools if you try to go musky fishing. Again, you CAN catch a musky in 32 degree waters but they aren't incredibly active and fishing will be much better once it thaws out and warms up again. The good news is we have more wet weather in the forecast this coming weekend. Rain or snow will be welcome on top of the snow packed up in the mountains to help boost flows for the upcoming spring season. It is a great time to tie flies right now. The shop crew is back from the VA Fly Fishing Festival in Richmond last Fri-Sat. It was great seeing everyone there. The show was awesome this year with a ton of vendors and great presentations. The shop is put back together and we are combing through all the new fly tying materials, tools, and gadgets to stock for the remainder of the winter season. Keep an eye out for new fly tying gear hitting the shop over the next few weeks! We are also working on our 2025 events calendar and will have information about our Iron Fly event, F3T Film Tour, Spring Open house and more available real soon. Until then stay warm, tie some flies, organize your fishing gear, and prep for the next round of warmer weather!
