Mossy Creek Fly Fishing Forecast 4/3/2023

Brian brings us the forecast this week. We enjoyed a small shot of rain at the end of last week. It wasn't much but it did give us a small bump in flows that should last a few days. Unfortunately we aren't seeing a lot of moisture in the forecast for the remainder of the week ahead. The best news is it will be sunny, warm, and the wind will be much easier to deal with than last week. With stable weather comes favorable fishing conditions. Brook trout fishing should be excellent this week. We would still recommend fishing the larger streams as the smallest drainages still have very low water flows. Dry River, Skidmore Fork, North River Upper, St. Mary's, Rapidan, Rose, Conway, Jeremey's Run, Big Run have been giving up some good reports. Elk hair caddis, parachute adams, parachute brown, parachute uv cinnamon, parachute uv purple, para wulffs, humpies, stimulators, mini hots are all great choices for dry flies. Copper johns, prince nymphs, psycho prince, frenchies, guides choice hare's ear, and squirrel nymphs will take brookies deep or dropped under a dry fly. You can fish larger nymphs right now as many of our nymphs are mature and ready to hatch! Small buggers and kreelex can be excellent for prospecting larger brook trout in a size 10. The caddis continue to hatch on our spring creeks. Dry droppers are good options as most of the spring creeks are running crystal clear. A size 12 or 14 caddis and a jigged caddis nymph or wet fly underneath is a good choice. Sculpin and crayfish patterns fished near the bottom will take some of the larger fish right now. If you get an overcast or rainy day be prepared for an excellent streamer bite this time of year. Bass fishing is cranking up right now and with the spike in water temps this week we anticipate fish will be on the feed. It will be a few weeks before we see fish in their spawning areas. Look for stable water temps around 60 degrees for fish to begin sweeping sites to spawn. With highs in the 60's and lows around 40 at the end of the week we anticipate spawn around the last week of April moving into the 1st week of May. That can change dramatically with temperature swings and water flows. We will keep you updated as the season progresses!
