Mossy Creek Fly Fishing Forecast 12/2/2024

Brian brings us the forecast this week. We hope everyone had a great holiday weekend! If you are looking to get out and burn off those Thanksgiving feast calories we have the spots to visit and how to be successful on your trip. It will be COLD this week especially overnight with temps in the teens. One important tip is take some hand warmers and extra gloves. If you hands get wet in these cold conditions it can be very hard to get them warm and functional again. Keep hand warmers in your jacket and wader pockets and slide an additional pair of gloves down in your waders to keep them warm and dry for emergency backup! Also watch for slippery spots as ice is forming on rocks and trails. Fish the sunny spots of the creeks where the stream bed may warm up a bit more than shady spots. Water is low and clear just about everywhere right now. Smaller nymphs, ligher tippet are in play for most of the freestone streams right now. Dry fly action is slow but not completely dead. Blue wing olives and midges are available most of the winter months especially on overcast afternoons. Size 16-20 dries and 6X tippet can be challenging but a lot of fun. Smaller sized jig streamers bounced on the bottom right now is a favorite winter approach to catching more and bigger fish. DWR has been out stocking and West VA has also stocked some of our favorite catch and release streams recently. Expect this cold weather to hang around for a while but hopefully we will get some rain here soon to get all of our trout water up and flowing better. Until then we will be focused on the spring creek trout waters and musky fishing. Grab some Stanley's Ice Off paste as you will likely need it on your fly rod guides in the mornings and afternoons! Have fun out there.
