Mossy Creek Fly Fishing Forecast 10/8/2024

Nick brings us the forecast this week. Sorry for the delay getting this out as a lot of folks are looking for good water levels to fish at the moment. We are drying out nicely, water levels are dropping, clarity is improving, DWR is out stocking fish, and the weather is looking sunny and mild to warm for the week! Most of our brook trout streams are up and running full. Some of the smallest drainages are in perfect shape right now. Some of the larger drainages may still have swift currents for another few days but you will find fishable areas along most areas like Dry River, Skidmore Fork, North River Upper, and many of the Shenandoah National Park streams. Please note that terrain could have changed in your favorite runs and pools! Be cautious wading as many trees, branches, and rocks/boulders may have moved. Dry droppers, bigger profile nymphs, smaller streamers are in play on the brook trout streams right now. Enjoy some fishing before the spawn kicks off over the next few weeks. The spring creeks are full and off color right now. The streamer fishing has been great. We anticipate some good dry fly fishing again once the creeks clean up a bit as we do have some nice warm days ahead! But for the next few weeks enjoy throwing some big flies in your 6wt rods and seek out a really big fish! Back Creek DH, Jackson Special Reg, Bullpasture, Spring Run, Cowpasture, Tye River, and Pedlar have been stocked in the region. It is time to load up on attractor nymphs and streamers for these stocked streams. The smallmouth rivers are still running a bit high and off color but we should start having some good fishing by the weekend and next week. Bass anglers should have some big profile baitfish patterns and large crayfish flies. Target the big winter ledge areas where the fish have been starting to stage over the past few weeks. Musky anglers should find some good fishing now that the water is up and still warm! Check out the video for all the details and get prepared for some good conditions for the fall season ahead!!
