Mossy Creek Fly Fishing Forecast 1/2/2023
Happy New Year from the Shenandoah Valley. Brian brings us the first fishing forecast of the year. The good news is we have good water levels right now and great temperatures this week. The weather will change mid week as a storm system will move in and bring us more rain Tuesday night through Wednesday. We will have sunny but cooler temps into next week. Trout fishing should be great to kick off the new year. The spring creeks are in excellent shape and the fishing has been solid. BWO's and midges are out in the afternoon hours and some days there have been significant numbers of duns on the water and fish taking them. The streamer fishing should be good through the overcast, windy, rainy weather mid week. DWR should be able to get out and stock more of your favorite streams in the coming weeks. Load heavy on your favorite attractor nymphs and streamers for the stocked fish. Best places to hit will be the Jackson Tailwater, Spring Run, Jackson special reg, Back Creek DH, North River DH, South River, Cowpasture, and Bullpasture. Brook trout streams like Dry River and North River will be providing some good action and those are easy to fish and rock hop to avoid eggs in redds still incubating. Size 12-16 attractor nymphs will work well under a strike indicator or tight lined should keep you busy with the brook trout. Musky anglers are dealing with flows just above average right now but the rivers are in prime shape for good winter action. Large flies and fast sinking lines are in play with these conditions. River temps are warm enough for some decent bass fishing right now so take advantage of this mid winter warm spell while it lasts!
