Mossy Creek Fly Fishing Forecast 1/30/23

Brian brings us the forecast this week. Cooler weather moves in this week after Monday. Water levels are up a bit from last weeks rain. Overall the fishing has been very good for winter so far. Mild wet weather generally means good fishing and that is what we expect to continue for the next couple weeks. Reports were good last week from SNP brook trout streams, GW Forest streams, and the spring creeks. BWO's are still around in the afternoon hours and some days more prolific than others. We should start seeing some bigger caddis towards the end of next month out on the spring creeks and on the larger freestones. DWR continues to stock our local rivers and impoundments. Some of our favorites that have been stocked in January include- North River DH, Hearthstone Lake, Elkhorn Lake, Back Creek DH, Spring Run, Bullpasture, Tye, Hone Quarry, South Branch Potomac, and more. West VA is busy stocking as well. Elk River Catch and Release and sections of the South Branch in Franklin down to Smoke Hole have been stocked. Some of our favorite catch and release sections will be loaded over the next month or so. Bass fishing on the Shenandoah has been pretty good this winter. When water temps are in the 30's the fishing has been extremely slow as predicted. Warmer weather and water temps that approach mid to upper 40's brings about some fun action. That usually happens on sunny warm days and in the afternoon to evening hours when water temps will be the warmest. We have been concentrating our fishing around 2pm-5pm with the best bite activity around 3 or 3:30 when you have good temps and still good light. Musky fishing has been pretty solid all winter. Weather and water conditions have been cooperating. We see some very cold weather ahead with a high of 32 on Saturday. Other than that day conditions look decent for getting out and targeting a big musky. Enjoy the video!
