Mossy Creek Fly Fishing Forecast 1/5/2026

Happy New Year Brian brings us the first fishing forecast of 2026! We have some warmer weather to look forward to. A bit windy into the middle part of the week but hopefully things will calm down so we can enjoy the 60 degree temps! The weather will trend a bit cooler by the end of the weekend. Rain is a possibility Friday into Sunday. We will be at the VA Fly Fishing Festival in Doswell VA this week. The fly shop will be OPEN every day this week but we will be packed up and heading to set up on Thursday and at the event Friday and Saturday. If you are planning to travel to the fly shop this week please note some rods, reels, lines, waders, boots, packs, and a lot of apparel will be in Richmond. There will be plenty of fly tying, leaders, tippet, accessories, flies, and gear to get you out on the water though at the shop. If you need anything specific, please shoot us an email or give us a call to ensure we have items at the shop for you. We are also taking orders to bring to Richmond! For fishing this week mild temps will help boost water temps a bit increasing feeding activity. Expect water levels to still be low and clear. The higher elevation brook trout streams still have some decent flow but the fish are spooky. We caught some brook trout over the weekend and even managed a few on dry flies! North River, Dry River, and Skidmore are low but have fishable levels right now. North River gorge and the natural chimeys area were stocked with brown trout. Bullpasture has been stocked fairly recently. Over in West VA the South Branch of the Potomac has been fishing pretty well. We need some rain to really improve water flows but fishing conditions are still much better now than they have been for months. Winter bass fishing should perk up with water temps creeping in the mid 40's by the end of the week. Musky fishing has been good and the weather will be much more tolerable to chase them this week! As I'm writing this Andy just hooked his first musky of the year! Time to get out after some fish and start off 2026 on the water!!
