Mossy Creek Fly Fishing Forecast 6/12/2023
Brian brings us the forecast this week. The rain in the forecast today didn't provide much relief from the recent droughty conditions. The good news is it won't be too hot much of the week. Temps will be in the mid to upper 70's with low's in the low 50's. With most of our brook trout streams running low the trout fishing is getting limited to the lakes, spring creeks, and tailwaters. You can still find some trout in the higher elevation lakes like Switzer, Elkhorn, and Hearthstone. (Brian mentions Todd lake in his report but that is a swimming lake closed to fishing). The Jackson and Smith River tailwater reports continue to be good. Mossy Creek, Beaver Creek, Buffalo Creek, and Spring Run are running low and crystal clear but the waters are cool and early mornings and late evenings can be productive with dry flies. The trout fishing will perk up once we finally get some significant rainfall. Our main focus right now is on the warm water fishing. Andy was out today hunting musky and the carp were enjoying the overcast weather and were tailing and feeding everywhere. The musky were skittish and enjoyed following the flies a lot but wouldn't commit. Damselflies and dragonflies are making an appearance in the afternoons. The topwater bite can be good early morning but has been really good after noon or 1pm until the evening hours. We have been starting our days fishing baitfish, crayfish, and hellgrammite patterns and then switching to topwater once we start seeing fish jumping. We have plenty of Wiggle Minnows, popping bugs, soft chews, swimming frogs, foam slice frogs, sheer damsels, and more in stock for some fun topwater action! The weather will be pretty awesome this week to get out. Stop by and see us to gear up.
