Mossy Creek Fly Fishing Forecast 4/18/2023

Brian brings us the fishing forecast this week. We have started off with some cooler and windy weather. We will see temps in the 80's later this week and then things will cool off again over the weekend. Our mountain brook trout streams are seeing some major insect activity right now but conditions are low just about everywhere. We need some rain to replenish water flows but if you keep a low profile and a stealthy approach you can enjoy some incredible dry fly action right now. The DH streams are still under catch and release regs until June. Get out and enjoy those before they warm up and harvest opens. The spring creeks are starting to see some sulphurs pop. There are still a few caddis popping and some other larger mayflies hatching. The low clear conditions this month have allowed for some excellent dry fly fishing. Try a dry dropper to prospect around when insects aren't on the water. Sculpins, darters, dace, chubs, and crayfish are active and the big fish will react well to these when they aren't looking up for dry flies. The smallmouth spawned early this year. With low water and warm weather we have seen smallmouth and largemouth already spawning. There are still some fish that have not yet spawned but could likely drop eggs later this week during the warm spell. Try to avoid pulling large males off nests and focus on fishing the riffles, runs, areas of current and seams to avoid the large spawning areas. Release fish quickly in the same area you caught them to avoid disrupting spawning activity for the next few weeks. The cold fronts passing through will likely slow the bite so focus on the warmer calm days for the best action. We will continue to update the progress of the spawn as we continue to observe the river over the next few weeks.
