Mossy Creek Fly Fishing Forecast 8/3/2021
We hope this summer never ends! Water levels are below average in our area and the rivers are running warm and crystal clear and that means fantastic warm water fishing! The sight fishing has been great and the topwater bite has been exciting. These conditions will require a bit more stealth and a bit more precision on presentations to keep from spooking big fish. We love fishing a 6wt rod, 9' 1x leader with 2x fluorocarbon tippet on the end for our popping bug fishing. The same rig will work well for your crayfish, hellgrammite, and baitfish patterns. If you fish larger patterns like deer hair bugs, swimming minnows, or diving frogs you will want to fish an 8wt with a 0x leader tapered down to 1X fluorocarbon right now. We have enjoyed targeting gar on the James river and carp and catfish on the Shenandoah. We are finding big largemouth stacked on the dominant wood piles and the smallmouth are cruising the shade lines mid day searching for bugs. Trout anglers have been toughing it out on the Jackson tailwater and on the spring creeks. Traffic has been high and the fishing holding up pretty well despite the pressure. Tricos are swarming and fish are also eating ants, beetles, hoppers, and midge sized droppers. We hope we get a shot of rain to help improve conditions for our trout but if not you will continue to see photos of smiling faces and big bass!
