News and Happenings from Inside the Fly Fishing Industry

-IFTD 2016

The world’s largest fishing show has come and gone and all we can say is “WOW”! The International Fly Tackler Dealer trade show really is everything and everyone fly fishing. Manufacturer booth spaces sold out at a record pace and the wait list was large. Attendance was at all time highs to see the industries latest and greatest products and services available to retailers and guides all over the world. The Mossy Creek staff attends IFTD every year for many reasons. Looking beyond the shine and glitter of new gear, fun events, awards, and legendary parties put on by the manufacturers, the number 1 benefit to IFTD every year still seems to be the networking opportunities. Our shop benefits greatly from the relationships created and strengthened at this show. We get to strategize and problem solve directly with all the industry leaders, media, consultants, and conservation orgs. We quite literally have everyone in fly fishing at our fingertips! Now it is no secret that what really drives us to attend IFTD every year is to get our hands on the best new gear before anyone else. This year will be one we won’t soon forget. There were a few other highlights at IFTD this year. The Drake Film Awards were one. Our new Virginia based film Tidewater has been featured in the F3T Film Tour this year and was nominated in Best Saltwater Film and Film of the Year. We wanted to thank Tom Bie and The Drake Magazine for the honor of being a part of the 10th anniversary of the film awards!

Demo Day this year was new, improved, and just a ton of fun! Our opinion might be a little biased on this one as Colby Trow, IFTD show Chair, helped develop the concept of the demo day at the Ritz Carlton resort in Orlando the day before IFTD started. Demo day was a kick off that allowed dealers a chance to speak directly with manufacturers and field test new products on the water. Being able to cast a majority of the industries most popular brand rods and fly lines gives us insight into what everyone is doing and allows us to make better decisions on what to stock next year. There were over 100 participants in this years demo day at IFTD with participants from all over the world. This event should be bigger and better next year!

The fly shop has been incredibly busy ever since IFTD. We have been bringing in new products and prepping for even more to arrive as they become available. Preseason orders are being placed for spring 2017, and we are working with manufacturers on great promotions that will be available this coming holiday season and through our peak season next year. Thank you AFFTA and ASA for putting on an incredible ICAST/IFTD and thank you to all of the manufacturers that support the show, and last but not least a thank you goes to all of the fly shop owners, outfitters, and guides that attended as well. The show requires support from all fronts to continue to grow and be successful. I’d like to say we are looking forward to 2017 but we are far too busy putting everything into action we just learned a few weeks ago!

Fly shop owners and manufacturer’s in ‘school’ at the AFFTA Dealer Summit

AFFTA Dealer Summit Bozeman Montana, October 15-19. Why does the AFFTA Dealer Summit matter to you? Well, may be directly way it doesn’t but it will make for a better Mossy Creek Fly Fishing shop and guide service! The American Fly Fishing Trade Association dealer summit is attended by the most motivated and best fly shops in the country. It hosts incredible classroom sessions by marketing, financial, merchandising, communications, networking professionals and consultants educating us all on how to be better business owners. Think of it as grad school for fly shop owners. Colby currently sits on the AFFTA board and is on the dealer summit committee committed to not only improving his shop but helping all shop owners grow the sport of fly fishing. We will be focusing on all the latest and greatest retail innovations to incorporate into our new store location. School starts in a few months and we are excited!!!
