Fly Fishing VA's Spring Creeks, Freestones, and Mountain Streams

From brook trout to giant browns, our expert guide staff will put you on them!

The Mossy Creek Fly Fishing guide service covers rivers, streams, spring creeks, and private waters from the George Washington National Forest across the Valley floor to the Shenandoah National Park. Virginia has over 2,300 miles of wild trout streams considered to be some of the best brookie water in the East, outside of New England. These streams are located in the higher areas of the Blue Ridge and Allegheny Mountains where the water stays cool, oxygenated, and there is sufficient cover. 800 miles of special regulation and stocked trout waters also surround us. We offer Full or Half day trips into the mountain streams or local special regulation waters.

Looking to land a trophy brown, rainbow, or brook trout? Mossy Creek Fly Fishing’s expert guides can lead you to the best fly fishing in Virginia. We offer half or full day trips to Susie Q Farm, Stoney Creek at Wintergreen Resort, 2 private stretches of Mossy Creek and 3 private streches of Beaver Creek. These properties are managed exclusively by our shop. Fishing pressure is kept to a minimum and all of them are regulated as fly fishing only, catch and release, barbless fisheries. Most of these fisheries are available for guiding year round. Booking is recommended at least 1 month in advance during the spring months. Give us a call to book today!

FAQ'S

We primarily fish 4-6 weight fly rods on our local waters but we do utilize smaller weight rods for mountain brook trout or small dry fly fishing. Waders are needed on many of our streams fall through spring. Felt boots are recommended for the best traction on our streams. We included all gear necessary for all of our trips.

Virginia’s trout fishing season runs year round as long as water levels hold up. Peak season runs March-June. Summer time will bring about great terrestrial fishing on the spring creeks. Fall fishing brings back cooler temperatures and a return of quality water levels. If you plan on booking a spring time date, be sure to contact us months in advance. Our guide service is typically booked 4-5 weeks out during the year but 2 months in advance for peak season.

Licenses
All anglers need to have a valid Virginia Freshwater Fishing License to fish any Virginia Waters. Trout Licenses are only required on Virginia State Stocked Waters from October 1-June 15th. Trout licenses on Virginia Designated Stocked Trout Waters are not required June 16th-September 30th. Get your license in the shop or online here https://dgiflicense.virginiainteractive.org

Clothing
Cool mornings can be normal in the spring or fall but it can be blazing hot in the summer. A light, quick-drying shirt (long-sleeved is good) and a good hat can increase your enjoyment of the day. A light rain jacket is recommended since intermittent rain can occur. Our guides almost always have sunscreen, but it is always a good idea to bring extra!

Footwear
Felt soled wading boots are preferred. Rubber soles can be slippery but studs are effective.

Eyewear
Eye protection is very important. Polarized sunglasses will help you cut the glare on the water and see fish and obstacles.

Food and Drinks
Water is supplied on all trips. Drinks and lunch will be provided on full day trips. Your guide will discuss lunch options with you prior to your fishing day.

Rods, reels, flies, tackle
Our guides want to ensure the greatest opportunity for success but we understand if you want to use your own gear. We carry the best gear in the industry and use of gear is included on any and all trips.
