One of the highlights of IFTD every year is the DRAKE FILM AWARDS. This is quite possibly the closest fly fishing films will ever get to the Academy Awards, and as competition becomes more fierce, the films just keep getting better and better! It was incredibly exciting to learn that Tidewater, our most recent Virginia based film, was up for a few nominations in the awards. Nick and Kami Swingle of Two Fisted Heart Production put together a great piece showcasing the incredible fishery that exists off the Virginia Coast. It was no surprise that the film was nominated for Best Saltwater and Film of the Year. Both of these categories were saturated this year with amazing films shot all over the world. Our hopes were high, but our friend Jako Lucas took the honors in both categories with his film Chanos Chanos – a film about Milkfish in the Indian Ocean. Kudos to Jako as his hard work and dedication paid off huge this year!
If you haven’t yet experienced Tidewater, you can still catch a short clip of it at the remaining F3T showings through 2016 or you can watch it here on VIMEO ON DEMAND or purchase a copy of the full length DVD HERE. This film is a journey that started with a conversation between fly fishing adrenaline junkie Art Webb and the Trow brothers. Art had spent some time off the coast of VA pursuing marlin on a fly. What was found during this exploration was the opportunity for possible world records, grand slams, and a new passion for pursuing bluewater species. Virginia boasts some incredible offshore fishing. With white marlin, blue marlin, sailfish, shortbill spearfish, and swordfish all possibilities, these three anglers wanted to showcase this fishery and share it with the fly fishing world. We hope you enjoy it!
It is pretty surreal to see yourself up on the big screen up for award nominations. We thank Tom Bie and The Drake for hosting this every year as it continues to stoke the fire for fly fishermen to push the edge, promote the sport, and bring some of the most incredible fly fishing footage to people across the world.
Being part of a film that is nominated alongside so many other incredible films is incredibly rewarding after so much time, blood, sweat, and effort is put into the entire project.
We are looking forward to our next projects and we hope we can continue to elevate fly fishing and share our passion with everyone that love this sport as much as we do.
