Word of Honor Fund provides a continuum of support that facilitates milestone events for the surviving children of SEALs and Special Operations personnel who die while assigned to a select Naval Special Operations Group.
Mossy Creek Fly Fishing prides itself on our service to our veterans and active service members and recently had the special honor and privilege to work with the Word of Honor Fund by guiding the son of a U. S. Navy SEAL whose father had died in the line of duty in 2002.
“Word of Honor Fund is committed to fulfilling the intentions of our fallen heroes by ensuring his children experience life as he had planned before his sacrifice. His untimely passing challenges his promise.”
The Word of Honor Fund contacted Mossy Creek guide Tom Sadler who worked with the WOHF team in arranging a three-day fly fishing experience for Nathan. Tom was ably assisted by three retired U.S. Navy SEALs, Jose (WOHF mentor), Pete and Fran who were part of the WOHF team. Their patience, good humor and willingness to step in to lend a hand added to the enjoyment and positive outcome of the trip.
Nathan’s trip started with a beginner class followed by fishing trips to Mossy Creek, Beaver Creek and Smith Creek. Although mid-summer conditions were tough, Nathan proved to be a quick study catching and landing a number of fishing including a 16” rainbow on one of the more challenging sections of Mossy Creek.
Colby assembled a package of gear (including fly rod, reel, line, leaders, tippet, flies, fly box, sling pack, nippers, hemostats) for Nathan and proceeded to explain the components, set up and appropriate use. Colby also gave Nathan a variety of Mossy Creek Fly Fishing swag including hat, tee shirt, stickers and DVD’s. Nathan reciprocated with gifts from WOHF and a very special challenge coin that honors his father’s memory.
Mossy Creek Fly Fishing appreciates the opportunity to work with the Word of Honor Fund and looks forward to working with them in the future.
