Virginia Fly Fishing Report 2/25/2015

North Fork Shenandoah River
North Fork Shenandoah River

Fishing reports fresh from the fly shop for the Shenandoah Valley and beyond!

The James and Shenandoah Rivers

The James and Shenandoah River are running very cold and are frozen along many stretches. We are hoping the 50 degree temps in the forecast for next week will help take care of the ice. Until then we will still be tying up some of our favorite SMALLMOUTH BASS FLIES for the upcoming season.

Mountain Brook Trout Streams

The Shenandoah National Park and George Washington National Forest streams are all running very cold and many have superficial and anchor ice. Anchor ice is ice that forms on the rocks below the waters surface. This phenomena can create hazardous wading. We would suggest holding off fishing up in the mountains until next week when the warmer weather should melt most of the snow and ice! Until then we would suggest getting out your gear, checking waders for leaks, and looking at your vest to see if you need to stock up on any leaders or tippet material. Spring is right around the corner! We look forward to seeing you up on the mountain streams!

Spring Creeks

Beaver Creek, Mossy Creek, South River, Buffalo Creek, Spring Run, and Smith Creek all may be cold and have some fringe ice in spots but they are flowing. More snow is in the forecast over the next few days and then we are expecting rain early next week with warm weather. Get your favorite streamers ready! We are excited for early season streamer fishing for the big boys! We truly hope we can bring more exciting fishing reports once things thaw out just enough for the masses to get back out on the water!

Managed Trout Water

VDGIF has been out stocking all of your favorite streams and rivers this winter. Right now many of the freestone streams are beginning to freeze completely over and there doesn’t look like much relief this week. I would stick to the spring influenced creeks and streams until warmer weather arrives. VA stocks streams until the end of May so you will have a little over 3 months to get your fill on these waters.
