Tying the Trow Minnow

The Trow Minnow is a popular big fish fly on the East Coast and for Western anglers. Designed as a big trout fly, it works very well on largemouth and river smallmouth. The fly is virtually indestructible and has a very erratic swimming action when tied properly and fished on a loop knot. Give this one a try folks. It is a quick simple tie and will crush the big boys.

Use this for

The Trow Minnow has a reputation for catching some of the biggest brown trout in Virginia but it gained its popularity out West. The erratic darting action of this minnow allows anglers to fish it very aggressively and trigger monstrous strikes. Anglers also like it for high water steelhead or big smallmouth bass. This is just an effective baitfish pattern that holds up to tons of abuse.

How to fish it

Tie this fly on a loop knot on heavy fluorocarbon tippet and watch it dip, dive, and dart all over the river! There is really no ‘wrong’ way to fish this fly, but we find that the biggest and most aggressive fish like this fly stripped as fast as you can.
